The circle is complete!

Well, today we really did live the final chapter of our "Round The World" adventure as we picked up Kevin's motorcycle from the docks. We were fully prepared to have some difficulty getting the two-wheeled vehicle out of Customs, but everyone was very nice, probably bouied by the fantastic blue-sky weather we're having and are predicted to have throughout the week-end. The US Custom officer even signed and stamped our "unusually formal" carnet without much ado and sent us on our merry way to collect the bike from the shipper. At the shipping warehouse, once again we were prepared for a long wait, but in a matter of minutes (and after paying the mysterious $135 handling charge) the crate was brought out and plopped down on Kevin truck-bed. All together, the whole process only took about one hour, including driving time. Not bad at all. Needless to say, Kevin was very excited to drive over to his garage and unpack the bike as soon as he possibly could. First things first though, and it was lunch time so we drove to Wendy's first for a celebratory double-bacon-cheeseburger lunch.

We spent the rest of the afternoon unpacking the bike and all the riding gear we had packed along with it. In fact, we think we actually could have packed a whole load of gems and diamonds in the panniers and no one would have known any better. As Kevin put his bike back together, I put on my riding boots and a borrowed helmet and took my first ride in months...since Turkey in fact. The bike felt fantastic, I can tell it missed me as much as I missed riding it! The ride was as they say, "short-n-sweet", only a couple of blocks to get gas. When he was finished with his tools, Kevin took the same fuel ride, the teaser, and returned very happy. In fact, he will be riding his bike all weekend since he is teaching a motorcycle safety course tomorrow and on Sunday.

As we drove "home" with the bike strapped in on the flatbed, we noticed that many fellow two-wheelers had taken advantage of the perfect weather to take their maiden voyage of the season. Motorcycle are everywhere! Once at home, I proceeded to give my riding jacked a thorough cleaning, something I had been holding off on doing until we left the grime and pollution of the third world behind. Now it's all down the drain and hopefully my jacket will look blue again, not new, not after 365 days of consecutive wear, just blue; happy, happy blue!

Big week: Big Show, big smiles, big food!

Last week was a busy one once again as our social calendar was bursting with great invitations from friends, old and new alike. On Monday the 7th we went to a Toots and the Maytals concert at the Paradise. The tickets were free courtesy of our friend Julie who was lucky caller #4 on WERS and won them. The concert was originally scheduled for Sunday, March 30th but it was cancelled at the last minute and re-scheduled for last week. In order to make up for lost time the band decided to have two shows on the same night and we got to go to the second show which began at 11pm! Needless to say, when the lead singer and main attraction of the band is in his late 60s to early 70s and presumably has been sick for a week, one cannot expect greatness on the second show of a double-header. Indeed, there was no greatness as we could barely even hear Toots although we were in the front row. In fact, the sound system was horrible and the whole concert sounded as if it was coming through on a home-made transistor radio!!! The only saving grace was that we had gotten the tickets for free, so we did the best to enjoy ourselves.

Tuesday the 8th was a very busy day; we had the home-opener of the Rex Sox at 2pm and then at 7pm were treated(by my brother Mariano and his new family, the Wights) to great tickets to a WWE(WWF) "Smackdown" event courtesy of "The Big Show" himself!! The Sox game was lots of fun, complete with an elaborate world-series ring ceremony and a cool fly-over by three F-16 jet fighter planes. Best of all, of course, is that the Red Sox won 5-0. So, after the game we headed to a local pizza joint to load up on carbs so we would be ready to scream our heads off at the wrestling match. We had four complimentary tickets and, believe it or not, were only able to find one friend willing to come with us to the event. (I believe this is because people up here in our social circle are a bit lame when it comes to trying new things). However, the guy who happily agreed to come with us, Mario, turned out to be a huge fan and connoisseur of wrestling who filled us in on all the ins-and-outs of the very entertaining sport. The event began at 7:30pm and there were quite a few bouts before our guy, Big Show, came out to fight "The Great Kali". It was a true meeting of the giants. However, Kali turned out to be no match for Big Show and the whole thing was over in less than one minute! (see video below) I was amazed at how heterogeneous the crowd was at the wrestling event, how many kids were there, and how much fun everyone seemed to have. Definitely a new experience for us that we quite enjoyed!

Friday night we went to Tommy Doyle's in Harvard Square for the CD release party for "Jo Henley" the band in which our friend Tien Yi plays the drums. The sound was great as was the vibe and we were very proud of her and happy for her. On Saturday, Kevin went out around 10:30pm to meet up with two of his long-time greatest friends, Carla and Kari. They rendezvoused at Jillians and played pool and had beers and yucked it up until the wee hours of the morning.

On Sunday we had another social double-header: Late lunch at Dina and Peter's place and dinner with the Curleys and Skiadass at The No Name (this time I brought my camera!). Catching up with Dina and Peter was great and as always their cooking was delicious and their eclectic group of friends a great deal of fun. As content as my belly and I were after that gathering, I opted for the lobster again at the No Name 'cause I just can't seem to get enough of the delicious crustaceans. Hmm, with our bellies now really full and our spirits high from great conversation and friendship, Kevin and I headed home to retire for the night and be lulled to sleep by the sound of the Sox V. Yankees game playing on the stereo in the background.

Catching up

We've been back home about three weeks now. Since our return we've spent a lot of time catching up with paperwork (Tax season), local news, and friends. Last night we went out to one of our favorite restaurants, The No Name Restaurant, and shared delicious New England lobsters with some of our friends (no pictures were taken because eating lobster is a messy business and no place for a camera!). Today, we went to another local favorite restaurant, Hammersleys, to join in a surprise 70th birthday brunch celebration for our friend Irv. It has been great to hear news of all the new engagements (congrats to Tien Yi and Alexa and their husbands-to-be), and babies (congrats to Ben & Stephanie, Leigh & Jason, and Kyle & Jill). It is amazing how much things can change in just one year, and more amazing still (in a comforting and somewhat disheartening way) how much things stay the same...

PS: Today I want to send out a HUGE Besito and lots of huggs to my brother Mariano in celebration of his 29th birthday!!! Whoo hoo for you Marianoski!!!

Done tripping!

OK, I am finally, finally, really, really back in Boston...for good...for now, and that's final. I have just finished unpacking from my visit to Miami to see my mamita and my brother and my friends (in that order!). It was very very nice to be amongst my family and most beloved friends whom I'v not seen in a year. However, even with all the great food, great wine, great company and great weather, I must say that I was quite happy to arrive in Boston today and be greeted by my loving husband, knowing that I won't be going anywhere for a while. I need to give my roots some time to grow back; just in time for Spring!

PS: Believe or not, even after just returning from our RTW trip where I rode over 25,000 miles on my bike, my brother still wouldn't let me ride his new Ducati Monster!!! Girls just can't get a breat when it comes to boys and their two-whelled toys!

Besitos a todos.

how about a day in Paraguay

After getting the customs agent to invent a visa for us on the fly for $30 we were allowed into Paraguay. We had heard rumors all around South America about the outbreak of dengue fever and how you shouldn't visit there. Also, it is known as an extremely corrupt place (the fact we could bribe our way into the country didn't give us reason to dispute this!)

We visited the only Paraguayan World Heritage site, a set of ruins left behind by the liberal Jesuit priests who (God forbid!) had tried to educate the local Indians and give them some independence and autonomy. Soon the Jesuits were banned from the New World.

It isn't often you get a World Heritage Site all to yourself. It was beautiful in a solemn way.

Namaste!

The boys get blessings at the island temple

What a ragtag motorcycle gang!

Kevin, motorcycles and kids go together like buffalo and momo's

Not bad scenery for a nice ride through the Himalayas with some of your new riding buddies!

Breathtaking Nepal

We really had a wonderful time in Nepal, and just looking back over the pictures we get even more appreciation for the beauty and uniqueness, the warmth of the people and its nascent entry into the modern world.

Here are pictures of Kevin in front of one of the Holy Temples, Clara with the women of our new friend Rupendra's family who invited us to their family meal, and some burning fires for all of the bull and goat sacrifices (look for the blood on the ground in front of the temple) for the coming of age of some of the boys in the local community.

Scenes from the amazing Pakistan India Border night show

Every night at sundown the Pakistani and Indian armies try and outdo each other with shows of macho marching, long toned yelling, and deferential respect. Clara had the camera trying to record the long monosyllabic call to attention.

Hundreds of people come to watch the ceremony which lasts about 1/2 an hour, with the crowds yelling nationalistic slogans back and forth...

"Long live Hindustan" !!! They yell on the Indian side.

When we left India, sometimes Clara and I would start up the chant:

"No More:" followed by "Hindustan!

"

Random pictures from Greece....

Here are Pictures with our wonderful friend Orestis, with a functional old BMW like the one Kevin has in his garage ready to get running (don't hold your breath!), the beautiful and talented Clara, and Kevin picking an olive from the tree that Athena granted to the Greeks who then named their city after her.

Scenes from Pakistan with James and Kathy

Kevin and Clara overlooking the City of Islamabad. You can just make out the city through the pollution.

Kevin shows how easy it is to get a Pakistani Military Guard to hand his automatic weapon over!

A picture from the the summer lodge of our hosts Richard and Barbara

Here we are riding through a tribal village in the North West Frontier Province. Our friend Kathy is videotaping from the back of her husband James' bike. She was worried we would get shot at any time.

Our favorite phrase at the time was from the movie "Team America", 'Dirka Dirka Burka'!

pictures from Thailand

With our friend Ood, a Thai Kickboxer from our ringside seats, and Kevin dancing with Godzilla in Pad Pong

Kyle says: Word on the Street....

Yes, the word on the street is that we are back in Boston and it is true. With no sleep we came back on the red eye at 6:30 a.m. and were at work by 9 a.m. My head started exploding immediately with all the idiot drivers I encountered, the obvious violations to the historical code which had occurred in my neighborhood since I left, and someone touched my tools!!!!

Anyway, a good nights sleep has helped the situation. Clara and I are living in a tiny one bedroom in Roxbury but it seems like Paradise compared to the places we have been living in. It is just like our first apartment out of college: mattress on the floor, furniture from the trash, mismatched utensils from my basement.

I feel fifteen years younger.

But, I can't wait to get back on the motorcycle for the next trip....maybe Africa!

Technicolor Island.

Yesterday after Kevin and Sean went surfing at sunrise accompanied by dozens of sea turtles, we took the Hana highway to the east of Maui. It is a super windy road along the coast dotted with waterfalls and roadside vendors offering delicious sweets and crafts. At night, Sean worked hard on an ice sculpture for an upcoming wedding.

Today we drove to Lahaina on a road that skirted the azure ocean and sometimes was so narrow that we barely fit on it in our borrowed Toyota truck, "brother-cuz" Sean's surf-mobile. We stopped several times to look at the humpback whales that appeared in the horizon in the midst of their mating season.

Tonight we walked across the street to Sean's friends' home (Malcolm and Poni) for a fantastic Hawaiian BBQ, complete with opihi (look it up!!!) and home-made banana bread...hmmmm, delicious.

Tomorrow we fly back to the mainland and clear across the country to you-know-where.

Lists from the World

Yes, we will be back in Boston soon. But, I wouldn't call it home. Home to me now seems like the world. I feel connected in some ways to every place we've visited, and certainly to many people everywhere. A trip like this makes clear how we are all alike, interdependent, with similar wants and needs. We need to learn to work together to accomplish those.

Please continue to check in for awhile as we do some "clean-up" of our files and pictures, and add comments about the trip. Some people have suggested we write a book, which we might pursue. We'd love your thoughts on what you liked, which of my stories you found boring, which pictures you liked best, what parts of the world you'd like to hear more of, etc. (For our foreign friends, this does not mean to write in and suggest we tell me more about YOUR country. This means you Orestis!)

Believe it or not, we haven't even written about some of the funniest, adventurous and scariest episodes of the trip. The drunken jerks with the gun in Ireland, the physical attack in South America, the Interrogation Room behind the Iron Curtain, and the best salesman in the world, the guys selling corn husks rolled in powdered cheese to children in Mexico. They were lining up for it!

Add comments to the blog or email us at juntoselmundo@gmail.com

Back in the USA!!!

Much to Kevin's dismay, we were let back in to the USA today without much ado. He was kinda looking forward to having to explain why he had visited Pakistan ("I was looking for Osama" was his rehearsed answer!) and to get a chance to tell some other travel stories, but he will have to wait for another time.
Anyway, we were only asked the regular questions about bringing in food or seeds or animals etc...as we answered the questions appropriately we were welcomed home with a smile and sent on our way.

So, we are in Maui, Hawaii. It is my first time here and I already see why people perceive this area of the world as a paradise...pristine coastline, crystal clear water, laid-back attitude, perfect weather...works for me! We will decompress here and then head back home to Boston on Monday, back to our real lives once again. What a shocker.
